Canada (Press Release) October 22, 2007 --
Dynamic Range Radio's second annual Halloween broadcast “All Hallows’ Week” will begin at midnight Pacific time on the evening of Wednesday, October 24th and play for a full seven days leading up to Halloween.
Listeners will hear a ghoulishly groovy mix of tunes including some traditional Halloween favourites like The Monster Mash and Werewolves Of London, as well as obscure treats for the alternative minded from indie bands like Wintersleep and XTC. In keeping with Dynamic Range Radio's eclectic spirit, All Hallows’ Week covers the gamut from modern, classic, and alternative rock, as well as Celtic, ska, Americana, jazz, and select cuts from horror movie soundtracks.
“This started last year when I was just beginning test broadcasts,” says Dynamic Range Radio’s owner and DJ John Erle Mundle. “Back then I was broadcasting short three hour sets once or twice a week, so I put together a show for Halloween and suddenly my listenership skyrocketed. Obviously there was a demand for Halloween-themed broadcasts at this time of year, so now that my station is ready for its official launch, I decided to do another Halloween show, but this time on a much bigger scale.”
“The idea is to provide the soundtrack for Halloween parties worldwide, whether they be in the office or at home. That’s why I’m broadcasting 24/7 all week. Also, look at all the cafés and retail outlets that are dressed up for Halloween, but very few of them are playing music that matches the décor. That’s where All Hallows’ Week comes in.”
The idea of Halloween music evokes images of heavy metal and goth, two types of music not usually heard in your local grocery store, but those establishments usually aren’t decorated with ghouls, gravestones, and ghosts either, so obviously the standards are a little different at this time of year, and Mundle promises that the music he plays will be work-safe. “You won’t hear dark, disturbing death metal, but it wouldn’t be Halloween without a little Black Sabbath or Bauhaus. In this context it’s all harmless fun, and I think most customers would understand that.
With internet radio under attack in the United States and with potentially devastating new tariffs on the horizon in Canada, this may seem like an odd time to be launching an internet radio station. “Maybe so,” says Mundle. “It wouldn’t be the first time someone thought I was crazy. But internet radio is something I’m passionate about, so I’m certainly not in it just for the money. I seriously doubt I’ll get rich with Dynamic Range Radio, but if I can earn a comfortable living doing something I love on my own terms, I’ll be very happy.
