United States of America (Press Release) December 28, 2007 --
In Friday (28, Nov, 2007), AOL stopped development of Netscape browser, announcing that the brand launched the commercial internet in 1994 had little chance of regaining market share against Internet Explorer in browser battle. That means Netscape is out.
"While internal groups within AOL have invested a great deal of time and energy in attempting to revive Netscape Navigator, these efforts has not been successful in gaining market share from Microsoft's Internet Explorer," Tom Drapeau, director of development, said in a Netscape blog post.
Once Netscape Navigator takes 90% of browser market, it accounts for only less than 1%. Comparing with investing more and more to revive Netscape, AOL preferred to spend its resources on its transition into an Ad-supported Web Business. The change left "little room for the size of investment needed to get the Netscape browser to a point many of its fans expect it to be," Drapeau said.
Till November 2007, Microsoft IE still accounts for 77.35% of market, and Firefox 16.01% according to internet metrics from Net Applications, while Netscape had only 0.6%.
If Netscape is out, Firefox will be the only brand to against IE in browser battle. As one of the most popular open-source software, The market share Firefox took had been largely increased in this year, however, it still has a long road to go if Mozilla wanna to defeat IE.
