United States of America (Press Release) January 30, 2008 --
New York, New York (2008) – The world’s largest high resolution, edge-blended video wall resides inside the lobby of InterActiveCorp’s (IAC) global headquarters in the Chelsea District of New York City. The venue is renowned architect Frank Gehry’s first building in New York City, featuring a 10-story glass façade with contours reminiscent of the unfurled, wind-tossed sails of a ship. The audio visual design and build was accomplished by Edison NJ based McCann Systems.
There are two video walls in the lobby. The larger, the West Wall, is the largest, 120’ x 11’, permanently installed, edge-blended video wall in the world, which is clearly visible from the West Side Highway. The challenge was to create unprecedented resolution on an enormously wide video wall with severe depth constraints.
After carefully analyzing the pros and cons of video cubes, LED’s and other technologies, McCann’s designers recommended large scale, rear projection using 18 projectors. Through a custom process the projectors are edge blended to produce one seamless, 120’x11’ image. A dual bounce mirror sled assembly rotates the image from the rear projectors allowing optimum resolution in a remarkably small projection space
The wall hosts images and data informed by IAC’s online businesses and major brands. On the lobby’s East side, the similar but smaller video wall is 11’ high by 26’ wide and hosts three rear screen projectors and comparable sophisticated technology.
The screen’s huge size and beyond-high-def requirements demand colossal computing power to generate video output. Seven head-end AV racks hold, among other gear, 30 high speed video server PC’s, ten real time video processors and large scale video routing equipment.
To conserve the lamps in the eighteen, 12,000 lumen projectors, McCann designed them to automatically shut down during the lightest traffic hours. They are replaced by programmable LEDs and fluorescent lighting which floods the enormous video wall with a pleasing multi-color array.
In addition to the unprecedented video walls, McCann implemented the AV design and integration of the boardroom. Because of the building’s revolutionary shape, the walls curve and meet at the corners, necessitating custom designs for the room’s AV system and the furniture.
For instance, the boardroom features an “avocado” shaped table with built-in monitors at each seat. Speakers and microphones are also built into the table. The room features two videoconference cameras plus a two projector, edge-blended projection system. The system is capable of videoconferencing, video graphics, PIP and other special effects. All boardroom AV equipment is controlled from the rack location.
Five additional, atypical conference rooms were finished with a custom AV solution that deals smartly with the “prow” shaped areas.
McCann Systems has demonstrated their extraordinary level of ingenuity and innovation in their successful execution of the world’s largest video wall. In addition, McCann’s Audio Visual proficiency is exemplified throughout the boardroom and multiple conference facilities within the IAC Building, securing McCann Systems’ reputation as a premier design-build audio visual firm.
